Dear Alumni,
It is a great honor to be writing this letter as the new Rush Chairman at Zeta Beta Tau, Iota Chapter. My name is Scott Adams, and along with our President Chris Fettig, we thank you for your involvement and commitment to our chapter. This past year we have had many reasons to celebrate as a Fraternity. One of our greatest accomplishments is receiving recognition from the DU Greek community for meeting all requirements for continuing being a fraternity on campus. Another great accomplishment was winning the Most Involved Fraternity at Greek awards this year. We hope to build off of this award and increase our involvement in the upcoming year through our two brothers who serve as Senators on the All Undergraduate Student Association (student government), our two representatives who serve as Vice Presidents on our Greek Council Executive board (we are the only fraternity with two representatives), our tour guides who work with the University Admissions office, and our three orientation leaders. Not only are we incredibly involved on campus, we also have current and former brothers involved in ZBT National. Doug Finn, our past president, is now a chapter consultant, traveling the country and meeting with chapters across the country, and Chris Fettig, our current president, who serves as an Undergraduate Director for the Supreme Council. This is a great honor because not only is this the highest position an undergraduate can serve, but there are only five undergraduates who receive this position each year.
Not only did Iota have success within the University community through the DU Greek Awards, but we were active in sending borhters to ZBT conferences as well. We recently sent four brothers to Conclave (a regional conference for ZBT Chapters) this past February, and one Brother to the James E Greer Presidents Academy. These conferences proved to be very educational and motivational for all brothers who were in attendance. Iota was also proud to have Chris Fettig represent our chapter at the Undergraduate Interfraternity Insitute which is put on by the National Interfraternity Conference in June of 2009. At the 2008 National Convention and Leadership School, which is the annual meeting of all ZBT chapters, we were honored by placing second in the Brummer Cup. The Brummer Cup is the highest award that any ZBT chapter can receive and it signifies that Chapter as the Best Overall Chapter in the country. We look forward to this upcoming year, improving our performance and strengthening our application so we can win the Brummer Cup next year. In addition to this major award, we also were recognized for our Outstanding Chapter Programming, Chapter Retention, Recruitment Improvement and Alumni Outreach & Programming. Iota looks forward to the 2009 National Convention where we hope to pick up even more awards.
While Iota continues to bring in awards and championships, we have not lost sight of our primary goal of why students come to the University of Denver, which is academics. Iota strives and has had a constant improvement of academics and personal growth since becoming a chapter in 2007. We are very fortunate to have the support of our academic advisor, Professor Elizabeth Stapp of the Daniels School of Business. Prof. Stapp has helped us implement many new academic programs to ensure that our brothers always have the necessary academic support, guidance, and resources. We also plan on strengthening commitment to academics even more through the implementation of a higher minimum GPA, an increased number of study tables and more tutoring and mentoring for the younger brothers. Furthermore, our alumni advisors have helped us continue to improve our Risk Management procedures and practices to ensure that our chapter acts responsibly. They have also been instrumental in helping us secure housing beginning this fall in our original house which was built for ZBT in 1959!
Iota chapter also is very involved in community service throughout the year. It is the Executive Board and the community service chairman's goal to provide at least two community service opportunities each week. This past year our brothers averaged thirty hours of community service per brother for the year. Some of our community service activities include, Habitat for Humanity, Soup Kitchen, and Project Homeless Connect, working with student peers with Social Learning disabilities and after school tutoring. Zeta Beta Tau National has partnered with Children's Miracle Network as our national philanthropy. Iota puts two events on throughout the year to raise money for them. The first being Get on the Ball where we raised over $1000 dollars in donations from students, parents and faculty. Our second is Red Nose Days, where brothers sell red clown noses to the DU community and is held in the spring. Red Nose Days was a great success and in total, we raised over three thousand dollars for the Children's Miracle Network through these events. We also supported our brother Louis Giller in walking in the March against Multiple Sclerosis, and donated over $1000 to this great cause.
As you can see Iota has been extremely busy and is only going to grow and contribute more to our DU community as well as the surrounding Denver area. Our timing to build momentum and prestige on campus is perfect considering we will be returning to our original chapter house on 1959 S. Columbine this coming fall. Moving into this house can only strengthen our bond of brotherhood and help motivate all our brothers to fully commit to ZBT. For all of these reasons, I would like to raise one last point in this letter, where I would like to ask the help of you, our alumni. As you know, one of the most important aspects of a fraternity is recruitment. It is my hope that as alumni you realize and understand the positive impact that fraternity membership can have on a student. I would like to ask you for recruitment recommendations for any new students you know who are entering DU this fall. It is our hope that with your help, Iota can grow and recruit quality men who will make a positive impact in our community as well as become leaders in our fraternity.
One of the major themes we plan to communicate to recruits throughout the summer and fall is that ZBT is a non-pledging, non-hazing fraternity. This means that when a gentleman becomes a brother they do not have to go through a pledging process like they would have to for any other fraternity. Every brother, new or old, has full rights and responsibilities. We each are expected to meet the standards that we establish for ourselves each and every quarter.
Thanks! Have a great summer!!! It’s great to be a Zebe at DU!
Sincerely,
Scott Adams
